Doctors Without Borders and All City Canvas join efforts to raise awareness, funds and buy medical supplies to care for COVID-19 patients
All City Canvas and Doctors Without Borders created Unidos con Distancia, a non-profit project and campaign that has two main goals. The first: to raise awareness and create a message of consciousness as we face the historical moment we are living in and will continue to live in; with a message that seeks to unite friends, families, organizations, and the media.
The second is to raise a large number of funds. These will be allocated to Doctors Without Borders to buy supplies and continue providing medical care to vulnerable patients with COVID-19 in Mexico. Hence, all the donations will be made through a crowdfunding campaign in Donadora.
The work of Doctors Without Borders
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an international medical-humanitarian organization that provides medical care to populations in precarious situations, victims of natural or human disasters, epidemics, and armed conflicts, with a presence in 70 countries. Among them, Greece, Pakistan, Syria, Spain, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, to name a few.
Furthermore, in Mexico, they aided for the first time in the 1985 earthquake and have since worked permanently in different parts of the country.
Doctors Without Borders in Mexico
Institutional, structural, and violence linked to criminal organizations operating in a significant part of the Mexican territory has serious humanitarian consequences for civilians; and that’s why in Mexico, MSF provides assistance to victims of populations in Other Situations of Violence (OSV). Moreover, they provide medical, psychological and social care in the states of Guerrero, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Tabasco. In addition, they operate an Integral Care Center for victims of torture, inhumane, and degrading cruel treatment located in Mexico City.
Also in 2019, the teams provided 30,773 medical consultations and 6,151 mental health visits throughout Tenosique, Tabasco; Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz; Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa and Matamoros, Tamaulipas; Mexicali, Baja California; Monterrey, Nuevo León; Mexico City, and in 64 communities in Guerrero.
Care for patients with COVID-19
MSF currently manages 3 COVID-19 treatment centers in Reynosa, Matamoros, and Tijuana. The first two are for severe case treatment, with capacity of 20 beds and 20 oxygen concentrators each. There are also isolation rooms for the care of mild and suspicious cases.
Additionally, in Tijuana, they have a capacity of 50 beds and 50 oxygen concentrators, moderate cases of COVID-19 are treated. In addition to health care, they also provide mental health and social work services.
While in Tenosique, they offer comprehensive primary medical care at the shelter “La 72,” support with the implementation of infection prevention and control protocols. Furthermore, they train staff on what to do if any cases of COVID-19 are reported inside the shelter.
In Mexico City, the MSF teams provide street care to migrants, refugees, and the Mexican population in shelters, hotels, hostels and community canteens to mitigate risks of COVID-19 contagion.
Thus, we recognize their efforts in our country and the rest of the world, which is why they are a key part of this initiative because we know that there is still a long battle to fight against the pandemic.
All City Canvas will donate all proceeds
Unidos con Distancia is a non-profit campaign that will donate all proceeds to Doctors Without Borders. Thus, the organization will be able to purchase inputs to continue helping the people who need it most.
