According to the University of Lethbridge, cannabis could be an option to eradicate the virus
A myriad of information goes around daily on the internet regarding the tests that laboratories around the world are testing to find a cure for the Coronavirus. However, there is scientific evidence that points out to the possible benefits of cannabis to combat this evil.
Thus, researchers at the University of Lethbridge found that cannabis extracts of the Sativa strain can serve as an alternative and preventive therapy against SARS-CoV2 virus. But before you get all excited and light up your joint, check out how Sativa works in the body.
The first thing you need to know is that this study is in the pre-publication phase, so there is time before the hypothesis can be proven. In addition, what is a fact, however, is that it is not the cure for the Coronavirus.
Weed extracts show potential for people to be more resistant to the Coronavirus
Furthermore, it is a supplement that could prevent or decrease the effects of the virus on our body or, hopefully, make our recovery more bearable. “These findings won’t lead us to find a vaccine but to develop other weapons against COVID-19,” said Igor Kovalchuk, biologist and author of the study.
Thus, the research began with the testing of 400 strains of marijuana, of which 12 derivatives responded favorably by preventing the virus from entering the cells of three-dimensional models of human tissue.
Moreover, the virus enters the body’s cells using a receptor in its membrane known as ACE2 (Angiotensin II Converter Enzyme). This substance is found in the lung cells, kidneys, testicles, intestinal tracts, and mucous of the nose and mouth.
Additionally, the marijuana strains investigated in the study managed to reduce the number of active ACE2 receptors by 73. In other words, Sativa cannabis increases our cellular resistance. Researchers say that CBD (canabidiol) is the one that disables these receptors, making cells less vulnerable to viruses.
