Centralia’s authorities have decided to cover up Graffiti Highway
Farewell to Centralia’s popular Graffiti Highway in Pennsylvania after being covered with soil by local authorities. This occurred after a large number of tourists visited in recent weeks despite the quarantine.
Highway Graffiti was an unofficial tourist attraction in the town of Centralia. It consisted of hundreds of anonymous tags on an abandoned part of Route 61, which is privately owned.
This fragment of the road was closed in the 1960s due to an accident in Centralia, caused by a fire that accidentally started in the mines below the town. Unfortunately, it spread and caused the earth to become stark due to high temperatures.
That incident was very popular and is also known as real-life Silent Hill. However, it’s not all terror and mystery; the highway was eventually graffitied, turning it into a tourist attraction.
No one knows who started tagging it, but many artists have left their tags on it. Up until a couple of days ago, Centralia’s authorities decided to cover the highway with soil.
The decision was made because, in recent weeks, the number of tourists had increased due to the free time due people have because of the quarantine.
Hence, the authorities had to cover up this spot for people to heed. Besides, it was already becoming a vandalism problem in that area.
Moreover, people were jumping over and knockin down signs just to get a picture with the place. Despite a group of fans demonstrated their discontent and sadness on Facebook, it has been done.
So farewell to the Graffiti Highway in real-life Silent Hill!
