The women of Idalia Candelas are free, autonomous and enjoy their own company
For many women being single is one of the best experiences in life and Idalia Candelas confirms it with her illustrations.
The series of drawings make up her book A solas (Alone). A publication that seeks to demystify the false beliefs of female spinsterhood. Furthermore, the artist is interested in showing a world where the girls she portrays own their bodies, time and emotions.
Her drawings are directly inspired by her own experience and her friends’. Thus, her intention focuses on reaffirming spinsterhood not as a condition, but as a conviction of self-love. Consequently, she denies prejudices regarding the denial of love.
“I was tired of having family and some friends questioning me about not getting married and having children. My drawings confirm that the women I draw are alone by choice and have that look of peace and tranquility that gives them the power to make their own decisions.”
Hence, we will see women having a quiet coffee in the morning; lying on the couch or on a bed reading. In other words, enjoying their autonomy and the pleasure of making their own decisions.
The book was published by Planeta and the distinctiveness is that in her images, she did not use any text. The illustrations of women speak for themselves. “I wanted to talk about love, sadness, the pleasure of having the people you love over, or going out to eat, travel or go to the movies alone, without any judgment.”
Lastly, her book A Solas is an invitation to all to discover that self-love does not need company.
