Michael Jordan sneakers set a new sales record at auction

Through an online auction, the auction house Sotheby’s managed to sell Michael Jordan’s first sneakers which he used in 1985.

Moreover, what is most impressive was the amount that this pair of Air Jordan 1 reached at the auction; the pair was initially expected to reach between $100 and $150,000. However, the sneakers, owned by Jordy Geller reached a record of $560,000.

Perhaps this figure has to do with all the paraphernalia revolving around these sneakers because it’s the model that the player used as an NBA rookie with the Bulls in Chicago for the 84/85 season. And, if we add to that that the sneakers are signed by the player, the price may not be that surprising after all.

Furthermore, the lucky buyer, whose identity is still unknown, set an all-time record, as they became the most expensive pair of tennis shoes anyone had dared to purchase. These Air Jordan 1 displaced the 1972 Nikes known as “Moon Shoe” worth $437,500.

In addition, the auction commemorated the 35th anniversary of the creation of the Air Jordan brand and the release of the documentary The Last Dance. The latter reveals moments from His Majesty’s time in the iconic team. Moreover, Jordan Geller —the buyer— is a collector and founder of the Shoezeum shoe museum in Las Vegas.
