The renowned Belgian artist ROA will present a new exhibition at the Backwoods Gallery in Australia on April 6. Therefore, we give you the details of this exhibition that will feature new pieces by the artist.
In Annihilation, the artist presents a visual discourse that alludes to ecological disasters caused by human actions. Moreover, it also raises awareness given that natural disasters, extinction, and the deterioration of wild habitats are consequences of our irresponsibility and greed.
Thus, ROA will exhibit multi-panel paintings that portray endangered species native to Australia, such as bilby, honey possum, numbat, tree kangaroo, and wombat. In addition, the artist used a quote from the philosopher and speaker Marcus Tullius Ciceron for the opening of Annihilation.
The quote states: “Art is born of the observation and investigation of nature.” From this idea, the artist believes that “Annihilation shows a ROA that challenges us to contemplate our current climate discourse and focus on silence, observe and investigate nature.”
A key piece of the exhibition is a wall mural on the gallery’s facade that shows his realistic version of an opossum. “An invitation to reconnect with nature, to empathize and as dominant species, to recognize that the choice is ours to ensure nature’s survival, not just theirs,” he adds.
Finally, the gallery only allows private previews by appointment only due to the current contingency but you’ll be able to get more information from the gallery’s website.
