Ruby Steele explores the role of contemporary Western women in Women on Sofas

Thus, Women on Sofas is the name of a photo series by British artist Ruby Steele. The concept of her work is the role of women in contemporary Western society, approached in an experimental way.

This series arises out of curiosity from the space occupied by women in contemporary Western society. Hence, exploring the domestic and public realm where they are forced to challenge social expectations.

For the photographer, there are still things to be polished within society, such as the perception of the domestic space that still relates to the exclusive work of women.

Consequently, these issues, while seeming minimal, are part of a social stagnation that seeps through. The later seeks to explore the use of several spaces with a trip on the sofa.

With this piece, she managed to observe a space beyond its natural and functional boundaries in a room. It is a piece of furniture, but also culturally rich, because that is where many things happen in a home. In addition, Ruby also explored the emotional response when leaving a socially predisposed comfort zone.

The images also seek to extract intimacy into free spaces without walls. Thus, you are invited to reconsider the meaning of feeling comfortable and safe in a room.

Additionally, Women on Sofas celebrates women within power spaces. It includes mothers, daughters, friends, strangers, writers, models, students, entrepreneurs and scientists. Hence, it highlights the importance of women in all existing spaces and not only in those socially predisposed several decades ago.
