Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama reveals her literary side with this poem of hope

In the face of the world’s relentless health crisis, several artists have presented pieces that narrate the concern for the pandemic; one of the artists is Yayoi Kusama who recently published a poem inspired by the Coronavirus and all its aftermath.

Furthermore, pen and paper were enough for the artist to express her concern and other ideas she has regarding the pandemic. Additionally, her verses reflect themes that have always concerned her, such as interconnectivity and planetary unity.

In addition, the piece also seeks to capture a panorama of hope, love and the challenge of overcoming adversity. “Today, having the world against COVID-19, I feel the need to approach it with this message,” explains her message on the Victoria Miro gallery website.

Thus, the 91-year-old artist said it is time to “stand up,” expressing her gratitude to those “who are already struggling.” Moreover, the exhibition KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature was to take place this year at the New York Botanical Garden, but is rescheduled for Spring of 2021.

The poem

“Although it glows out of reach, I still pray that hope will shine/ Its brightness illuminates our path/ This long-awaited great cosmic glow/ Now that we are on the dark side of the world/
The gods will be there to strengthen the hope we have extended throughout the universe.

For those who are left behind, the story of each person and that of their loved ones/ It is time to seek a hymn of love for our souls/
In the midst of this historical threat, a brief burst of light points to the future/ Let us joyfully sing this song of a splendid future/
Let’s go.

Embraced with deep love and the efforts of people around the world/ Now is the time to overcome, to bring peace/
We meet out of love and I hope to fulfill that desire / The time has come to fight and overcome our unhappiness.

To COVID-19 who stands in our way / I tell him to disappear from this land / We will fight/ We will fight this terrible monster/ Now it is time for people all over the world to stand/
My deep gratitude to all who are already fighting.”
