The city of Ibiza will be filled with art from July 13 to 17 with the launch of the first edition of Contemporary Art Now or CAN. It is a contemporary art fair that will bring together the best national and international exponents of contemporary art.
It is a new art fair that aims to become an innovative platform to discover the latest in current creation. Emphasizing the new languages that have emerged or are emerging, but leaving a gap for the proposals of established artists who have stood out in recent decades.
CAN, Contemporary Art Now, is an initiative by Sergio Sancho, a cultural promoter who already surprised us six years ago with URVNT Art Fair (Urvanity). The event is curated by the critic and curator Sasha Bogojev who invited a selection of galleries that, given their trajectory and programming, are outlining the panorama of current creation.
“These are galleries that are at the forefront of the emerging world art scene. By focusing on emerging and mid-career creators, there is a strong affinity towards the aesthetics of the works on display, which will give the entire fair a very focused and distinctive appeal,” explains Bogojev.
“CAN means ‘house of’ in Ibiza. We aspire to be the hosts of the avant-garde of current creation. Hence our last name, now. The island is an endless source of inspiration in many artistic aspects, we think that it can also be in art as it is in music, gastronomy, fashion… or hospitality”, explains Sancho.
In its first edition, it will bring together some thirty international contemporary art galleries from all over Europe, America and Asia. Some of the confirmed galleries are Nanzuka Underground (Tokyo), Carl Kostyál (London/Stockholm), WOAW Gallery (Hong Kong), M+B Gallery (Los Angeles), 1969 Gallery (New York), Ruttkowski;68 (Cologne/Düsseldorf/ Paris) andor Dio Horia (Athens), among others.
On the Spanish side, ArtNueve (Murcia), L21 Gallery (Palma de Mallorca), Galería Alegría (Barcelona), Veta (Madrid) and Polígrafa (Barcelona) will participate. In them we will find works by Ana Barriga, Javi Calleja, Jordi Ribes, Pablo Benzo, Stefan Rinck, Christian Rex Van Minnen, Sally Kindberg, Jake Clark, Matt Bollinger, Chechu Álava, CB Hoyo, Marria Pratts, Ryan Travis Christian, Travis Fish, Julio Anaya Cabbanding, James Jarvis, and Imon Boy.
Furthermore, this year La Nave Salinas Foundation will open an exhibition with the Hungarian artist Eva Beresin, born in Vienna. The exhibition will feature monumental pictorial pieces. Despite the beauty of her works, she speaks of comedy, tragedy, surprise and despair.
Finally, the fair will be held at the fair premises (FECOEV), in the outskirts of Dalt Vila, with a careful attention to the architectural design where spaciousness and natural light will play a leading role.
