Faced with current protests, the American Museum of Natural History requested the removal of the statue of Theodore Roosevelt
The statue of Theodore Roosevelt in front of the American Museum of Natural History will be removed. This is as a result of the current racial protests in the United States and as a unanimous decision of the mayor.
Protests in the United States have led to the removal of several statues around the country. Most of them represent the conquerors who took over lands based on violent acts.
Furthermore, they promote acts such as slavery and therefore racism and racial differences, which many of the inhabitants are willing to destroy in one way or another.
This news had already been reported by The New York Times and now, everything is confirmed by the mayor of New York City who argued that it is the decision and the right time to remove the statue.
According to the mayor himself, Bill de Blasio, the museum was the one to request the removal of the monument. Thus, the petition was accepted as part of the efforts to advance the city’s social justice.
The statue in question depicts Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth president of the United States. He is sitting on a horse and shows a Native American on one side and an African man on the other.
This representation is consistent with the racial and inequality demands currently being voiced in the US, so the mayor correctly justifies the current context to eliminate what it represents.
And while for many it is just a statue, it’s really a symbol that represents something negative. In addition, keeping it “alive” by an image that no longer has a place in modern times.
